Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple-Chicago Chapter
Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States. The Temple is affiliated with the True Buddha School, founded by Living Buddha Lian Sheng, Grand Master Sheng-Yen Lu, who is revered as the Temple’s Root Guru and lineage master. Its Vajrayana lineage draws upon the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism—Nyingma, Gelug, Kagyu, and Sakya—integrating the rich teachings and practices transmitted through these distinguished traditions. Since its formal establishment in 1994, Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple has served the Buddhist community for thirty-two years. Over more than three decades of propagating the Dharma and benefiting sentient beings, the Temple has flourished as a vibrant center of Buddhist faith and practice, drawing devotees from Chicago and throughout the United States. Each year, it hosts approximately twenty-six major Dharma ceremonies and more than one hundred other religious services and activities, making it one of the important centers for Buddhist practice and Dharma propagation in North America.
Located near Lake Michigan, one of North America’s five Great Lakes, Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple-Chicago Chapter enjoys a peaceful and auspicious setting, convenient transportation, and beautiful natural surroundings. For decades, countless Buddhist practitioners and devotees from Chicago and throughout the United States have gathered here to pay homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, chant sutras, engage in spiritual practice, and pray for blessings—together creating a sacred sanctuary and cultivating boundless virtuous affinities.
Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple-Chicago Chapter traces its origins to Lian Fang Tang, Lian You Tang, and the Chicago North Buddhist Practice Association. In 1994, through the convergence of auspicious causes and conditions, the three groups formally united to establish Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple. The Temple encompasses nearly 15,000 square feet and is legally registered in the United States as a nonprofit religious organization. In 1998, a fire caused by aging electrical wiring damaged the rear portion of the Temple. Faced with this unexpected hardship, all members of the Temple community came together with determination and perseverance and immediately began the work of reconstruction. The rebuilding was successfully completed the following year. Over the decades that followed, through the devotion and generous support of generations of practitioners, devotees, and Dharma protectors, the Temple has continued to expand, renovate, and beautify its sacred spaces, gradually becoming the magnificent Buddhist sanctuary that stands today, with numerous shrines dedicated to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharma protectors, and enlightened beings.
The first floor of the Temple includes the Main Buddha Hall, City God Hall, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Hall, God of Wealth Hall, Child-Blessing Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Hall, High King Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Hall, Manjusri Bodhisattva Hall, Kalachakra Vajra Hall, Vimalakirti Hall, Zaki Lhamo Hall, and a library.
The second floor includes the Dharma Protector Hall, Thousand-Buddha Medicine Buddha Hall, Mazu Hall, Five-Colored Acala Vidyaraja Hall, Lineage Masters Hall, and the True Buddha World Hall.
Outdoors, the Temple also respectfully enshrines the Four-Faced Brahma Shrine and a sacred image of Venerable Pindola Bharadvaja. Together, these sacred spaces form a solemn and magnificent Buddhist sanctuary in which deities and enlightened beings of both the Esoteric and Exoteric traditions are reverently honored, under the compassionate blessings and protection of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
For thirty-two years, Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple has remained steadfast in its mission of propagating the Buddhadharma and benefiting all sentient beings. Its Dharma activities have continued to flourish, and its community of devotees now extends throughout Chicago and across the United States. Generation after generation of sincere Buddhist practitioners has come to the Temple to listen to the Dharma, cultivate spiritual practice, and awaken the Bodhicitta—the aspiration to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. Today, the Temple holds approximately twenty-six major Dharma ceremonies each year. Every month, it conducts solemn sutra-chanting and merit-dedication ceremonies for the deceased, as well as traditional ceremonies honoring the Earth God. Esoteric Buddhist group practices are held every weekend.
Guided by the principles of “Reverence for the Guru, Respect for the Dharma, and Diligent Practice,” the Temple leads devotees from all directions toward a deeper understanding of the Buddhadharma, diligent spiritual cultivation, and purification of body and mind. Through these practices, the Temple aspires to help all beings increase their wisdom, purify karmic obstacles, transcend suffering, attain happiness, and ultimately advance toward liberation and spiritual freedom. Buddhism is not only about spiritual cultivation; it is also about putting compassion into action. For many years, Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple has remained deeply committed to charitable work, humanitarian relief, and service to the greater community. Since its establishment, the Temple has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to disaster-relief efforts and charitable causes around the world. It has also actively supported charitable initiatives related to pediatric cancer research and treatment. Through these efforts, the Temple seeks to embody the Buddhist spirit of compassion, service to humanity, and benefiting all sentient beings.
Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple-Chicago Chapter has also long been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Buddhist culture, with particular emphasis on the education and development of children and young people. The Temple hopes to nurture in future generations the values of compassion, wisdom, gratitude, and service to society. For more than twenty years, the Temple has offered free community education programs. Over the years, thousands of children have participated in these programs. Current offerings include Chinese language, dance, karate, chess, and art classes, providing children and young people in the community with diverse opportunities for learning, personal development, and cultural enrichment.
Through its longstanding commitment to community education, cultural preservation, charitable service, and Buddhist teachings, Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple-Chapter has become far more than a sacred place of worship. It has also grown into an important spiritual home that connects families, the community, and future generations. Thirty-two years have witnessed the remarkable journey of Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple—from its humble beginnings, through reconstruction and renewal, to the magnificent Buddhist sanctuary it is today. More importantly, these thirty-two years represent the continuous transmission of faith, devotion, compassion, and aspiration from one generation of Buddhist disciples to the next.
Looking toward the future, Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple will continue to uphold the Buddha’s teachings of compassion and wisdom, propagate the authentic Dharma, preserve and dignify the sacred temple, serve society through charitable endeavors, nurture future generations, and cultivate positive affinities with people from all walks of life. May the compassionate light of the Buddhadharma illuminate ever more sentient beings, bring harmony and peace to society, and sow the seeds of compassion and hope throughout the world.
